Make Old Add-ons Work with Firefox 4

The Latest available Firefox 4 has some quite changes from all the previous releases. Mozilla removed the status bar from the bottom itself to would be to make a chrome look to Firefox. however the icons you installed on the status bar is still available on the Addon bar which can be activated by View>Toolbars>Add-on bar or by pressing CTRL+ / on the keyboard.

One of the main changes is that in Firefox 4 the addon section add-on section has been completely re-designed. when you click on the addon options from tools, the Add-ons manager opens up as a new tab with Addon compatibility checking. This feature is to make sure that all your installed addons are compatible to Firefox version. Any addons which is not compatible for the browser will be disabled in the start up.

Use old Addons with Firefox 4

All your old add-ons or extensions may not work with Firefox 4 since they were written for Firefox 3.x releases. You will be notified as the corresponding extension is disabled. The easiest way to re-enable them is to turn off Addon compatibility checking. Follow below steps to disable:

  1. Type about:config in your Firefox 4 browser, hit enter and click agree button.
  2. Now right click and select new>Boolean value, type preference name as extensions.checkCompatibility.4.0
  3. Configure value to False
  4. Restart browser.
Now you should have all your old addons work with firefox 4.

Perhaps, old add-ons offer lightweight use of browsing speed. For that reason, it has negligible effect on the firefox speed.
